Sponsored by GTB CIC, the awards recognise contributions from individuals, programmes, services and organisations.

2026 · Silver Award recipient

The Quiet Unit at Pardubice Prison in the Czech Republic is the first recipient of a Justice 2.0 Award, receiving Silver recognition.

Inspired by Norway’s Retreat House programme and rooted in spiritual guidance through silence, it welcomes people of all faiths and none. People in prison from across the Czech Republic can participate, with 12 programmes offered each year. Each lasts 11 days and supports six participants.

A dedicated unit provides individual cells and a structured daily routine, balancing solitude with connection. Participants meet individually with the lead facilitator, share lunch and reflect together on the day’s experiences. Shared reading, creative work, meditation, prayer and psychospiritual therapy create opportunities to explore their behaviour, come to terms with the past and find the courage to forgive themselves and others.

The programme centres on self-awareness, inner balance and personal growth, with the aim of supporting successful reintegration into society and reducing reoffending.

Why we recognised this work

The Quiet Unit received a Silver Award for its established, people-centred approach to prison practice. It creates space for reflection, responsibility, peace and personal growth, with meaningful activities and relationships that put the Principles of Growth into practice.

Delivered regularly throughout the year and supported by trained instructors, the programme demonstrates embedded practice with clear outcomes. The assessment highlighted powerful qualitative feedback from participants about honesty, self-reflection, being understood and being seen as a person.
